Outremont borough stands firm on Côte Ste-Catherine bike pa

One thing Montreal is putting money into, at least at the borough level, is bike paths. reported that at a public meeting a couple days ago, the Outremont borough said that no opposition can stop the Cote Ste-Catherine bike path from becoming reality, and furthermore, it's nearly halfway finished! The most vocal opposition came from one particular , and focused on several points that seem quite ignorant given recent bike path construction, including calling the protective barrier separating bike lanes from car traffic "large and wasteful", and pointing out that with skinnier car lanes "Traffic goes right up to the sidewalk clearly endangering innocent lives". Actually that's a good point, traffic does endanger innocent lives. Unfortunately that's just a fact we live with EVERYWHERE.

The opposition blog makes the argument that without a parking lane between the sidewalk and traffic lane, buses with "famously deadly" mirrors will make pedestrians unable to use the sidewalk. Currently there are 6 lanes on Cote Ste-Catherine - 4 for traffic and two for parking. The bike path will occupy one parking lane. They are also removing the other parking lane, but leaving only four lanes of traffic. That means that what used to be 4 lanes of traffic will now occupy a little less than 5 lanes of space (parking lanes being less wide than traffic lanes). This should give plenty of room for traffic to maneouvre without harming pedestrians. Is there something I'm missing?
