30 km's of reasons to keep pedalling

True, last Saturday marked the end of the 'cycling' season in Montreal - that is, the point after which the city will not keep up its bike paths. And yet, a first this season: according to , 30 kilometeres of bike paths will stay open throughout the winter. That will include the Maisonneuve bike path and other downtown-area paths. The article doesn't specify, but perhaps the Berri path (the most-used cycle path in the city), the Parc path, and the newly-repaved Rachel path will be included. Let's hope that in addition to plowing, the city diligently salts the paths to keep any runoff from freezing over.

30 kilometres ins't much, but it sure is better than nothing. Plus Vélo Québec says they hope to increase that number to 70 or 80
kilometres in the next five years. Thanks to them for keeping up the
pressure!

Also, keep in mind a lot of paths are painted on roads that will be plowed for cars. With good tires and storage, frequent cleaning, and knowledge of the best routes, there is no reason why you can't ride well into wintertime.

So cycle on, Montrealers! We'll be lending advice on sticking it out through the winter, so we can
make good use of those 30 kilometres and show the city how badly we want those paths cleared.
