Nouveau trailbike VPP par SantaCruz: Le Nomad

Santa Cruz showed two new models at the recent Bike Show in Stoneleigh; the Blur XC and the Blur LT. Both great bikes – the Blur XC is a revamped Blur, made lighter, by nearly 3/4lbs, lower to the ground and racier, still with 115mm (4.5in) travel. The Blur LT takes the travel up to 135mm and with a gusseted headtube, makes longer travel forks more of a realistic fit.

Despite these fancy new machines, you could see that some riders, and especially some Santa Cruz dealers were expecting more. Surely there was another bike hiding round the back of the stand? Where was the middle ground between the lightweight Blurs and the chunky VPFree? Well, they were right, there was another bike, but it wasn’t being launched until the Sea Otter event, which starts today. So we’re happy to show you the new Santa Cruz Nomad before nearly anyone else.

The new Nomad fills that gap between Freeride and XC – let’s call it all-mountain for argument’s sake. What it offers is 6.5in of VPP travel in a gorgeous (love it or hate it) package without too much of a weight penalty.

You can tell that Santa Cruz has been busy with its 3-D design software – there’s hardly a normal looking tube on this bike. The top ‘tube’ starts almost like a Schwinn ‘gas tank’ and then swoops gracefully down to the top pivot, then back up again to the seat tube. The downtube is reasonably normal, with another swoopy shaped piece, this time the shock mount, welded along it. The rear swingarm looks equally elegant and organic. Even the top swing link is welded from formed pieces. The whole look is part organic, part Flash Gordon spaceship. We like it very much. Some riders might feel it doesn’t look ‘core enough though.

There’s no denying the credentials of the ride, however. On the brief test ride that Mike took for us, he came back very enthusiastic about it – as a longer travel Blur, the suspension works well whether you’re a gear masher or a spinner and the full might of 6.5in of travel doesn’t really make itself known until it’s needed.

We only had a short ride on it, but can already tell that it’s a winner. When the bike appears later in the year, expect there to be long lines for it…
