SRAM announce Roam 40 and Roam 30 wheelsets

Message par redplanet » Jeu Mai 15, 2014 2:41 pm

SRAM just released news of its , offering the benefits of X01 and XX1 at a budget pricepoint. To complement this, SRAM announced two new lower-priced wheelsets in the form of the Roam 40 and Roam 30, tubeless-ready cross-country/trail wheelsets for the everyday mountain biker. These new wheels join the current line-up including the .

The two wheelsets share many similarities, including an asymmetrical rim design and 21mm internal/25.5mm external rim width. SRAM uses 24 straight-pull spokes front and back in a two-cross pattern, with a single spoke length throughout.

SRAM’s ‘Taper Core’ rim extrusion is used on both, something the company claims to reinforce the rim sidewalls for improved dent resistance, with material removed in the middle to save weight.

Both wheelsets roll on similar hubs, making use of aluminum axles and a total of four sealed bearings in the rear hub. Not surprisingly, both wheels are available with either XD cassette drivers to suit X1/X01/XX1 cassettes, or standard 9/10 speed cassette bodies.

Each model features SRAM’s ‘side-swap’ axle interchangeability, allowing for the quick fitting between all major axle standards. Front size available: 9x100 QR, 9x10 QR OS, 15x100, 20x110; rear sizes available: 10x135 QR, 12x135, 12x142.

The Roam 40 features SRAM’s recently announced ‘double-time’ freehub mechanism, which provides 52 points of engagement, or 6.9 degrees.

The Roam 40 offers a welded, UST tubeless approved rim (Roam 30 is just claimed ‘tubeless-ready’). Further weight is reduced on the 40’s with double butted spokes and aluminum nipples.

The Roam 40 is available in 26, 27.5 and 29” and claimed to weigh 1,560g, 1,615g and 1,695g respectively.

The Roam 30 sits at a lower price again, giving up a few features and weight saving measures. The rim changes from a welded join to a sleeve joint type. The straight pull spokes become straight gauge and the nipples brass. The freehub ratchet mechanism changes too, replacing the four pawls in the Roam 40 for just two, taking the engagement points from 52 to just 26.

The Roam 30 is available in 26, 27.5 and 29” and claimed to weigh 1,730g, 1,785g and 1,870g respectively.

Both models are expected to be available in June and pricing is as follows:
