On bikes with 3 chainrings, the chain has 3 different positions in relation to the rotation point of the cranks.
Normally, this has a negative influence on your suspension because of chain tensioning (bobbing in granny gear, for
example).
The Hammerschmitt transmission would replace ONLY the three front chainrings only. Bikes would therefore still have
to have a rear derailleur. The big advantage of the new transmission is, that the chain is always in the same position
in relation to the rotation point of the cranks. With this in mind, it will be easy for an engineer to design a full-
suspension frame with a pivot at the same height as chain, so chain-tension will not affect the suspension. The 3
designers in the article assume it will make 4-bar linkage obsolete.
