Oakley Airwave Goggles work with iOS and Android

Oakley recently unveiled a pair of ski/snowboard goggles with technology that could easily be applied to mountain bike goggles, and perhaps, to sunglasses in the near future.

Oakley partnered with Recon Instruments to create a pair of goggles with a Bluetooth-enabled heads-up display that will work with iOS and Android devices. The $600 Airwave incorporates Recon’s , which sits below the right eye and projects a screen that Oakley claims to be equivalent to viewing a 14-inch monitor at a distance of five feet.

The goggles, as well as the wearer’s smartphone, can be operated via a waterproof wristwatch-size controller. Some of the features that could be particularly relevant to cyclists include elevation gain, navigation, trail mapping, maximum and average speed and heart rate. The possibilities of this technology are intriguing, if not also a bit overwhelming.

What do you think: Would having all this data in front of you be an improvement, or would detract from the simple pleasure of riding a bike?
